Safe Fun in the Sun

Summer is around the corner, with longer days full of swimming, sports, outdoor meals and sunshine. Here in Austin, TX, opportunities for fun in the sun surround us!

Below are some reminders about ways to stay safe and healthy all summer long:

* Stay Hydrated – Pack water bottles for the whole family, and encourage kids to drink during swim breaks, even if they don’t feel thirsty. Water-filled whole fruits (watermelon, oranges, grapes) make great snacks. Sports drinks are full of added sugar, don’t always have the correct electrolyte balance and are not usually necessary.

* Hats and shade – Taking breaks from the sun is always smart.  Encourage everyone to wear hats and have a good spot to escape the sun. * Healthy snacks – a nourishing snack should be between 100-200 calories and a good combination of protein and carbohydrate to provide lasting energy between a long bike ride or splashing in the waves.

* Sunscreen –  The American Academy of Dermatology tells us that choosing the right sunscreen can help reduce the risk of skin cancer and early aging caused by the sun. Make sure your sunscreen covers these bases: broad-spectrum protects skin from both UVA and UVB rays; SPF 30 or higher and water-resistant. All sunscreens need to be reapplied after spending time in water.  Apply sunscreen every day, not just on beach/pool days.

Wishing everyone a safe, fun-filled summer season!
